You set the thermostat to 72 in the living room and it is perfect. Then you walk upstairs in Marshall on a July evening and the bedrooms feel like a different climate. This is one of the most common calls we get, and the frustrating part is that your air conditioner may be working exactly as designed. The problem is usually distribution, not capacity.
Here is why it happens and the seven fixes, from the ten-minute ones to the real solutions.
Three things work against you at once. Heat rises, so warm air naturally stacks on the upper floor. Your roof and attic absorb sun all day and radiate that heat downward into the bedrooms. And your thermostat almost certainly lives on the first floor, so the system stops cooling as soon as the downstairs is comfortable, regardless of what is happening above it.
Partially closing first-floor supply vents pushes more air upward. Partially is the key word: closing vents completely disrupts system pressure and can freeze the coil, which is the mistake behind many cases of AC freezing up. Reduce, do not shut.
Most modern thermostats have a circulate or scheduled-fan setting that runs the blower periodically between cooling cycles. It mixes air between floors and evens out the difference, without the humidity penalty of leaving the fan on ON. Details are in best thermostat settings for summer.
Any restriction in airflow hurts the farthest rooms first, and upstairs is almost always the farthest. A clogged filter or dirty evaporator coil shows up as weak upstairs vents long before it shows up downstairs. Start with how often to change your AC filter, then have the coil cleaned during summer AC maintenance.
This is the highest-return fix that has nothing to do with your equipment. An under-insulated attic bakes the ceiling of every upstairs room. Air sealing the gaps around light fixtures, plumbing stacks and the attic hatch, then bringing insulation up to depth, changes the second floor more than any thermostat adjustment will.
Upstairs runs are usually the longest, and often the most compromised: crushed flex duct, disconnected joints, undersized returns, or duct running through a 130-degree attic. Leaky ducts in an attic are effectively air conditioning the roof. If you have never had them evaluated, the symptoms overlap with signs you need AC duct cleaning.
Many two-story homes were built with a single return downstairs, which makes balanced airflow nearly impossible. Adding an upstairs return, or installing a zoning system with dampers and a second thermostat, lets each floor get what it actually needs instead of averaging them.
When ductwork cannot be fixed economically, or when the trouble is a bonus room, converted attic or addition, a ductless mini-split solves it directly. Do not buy a bigger air conditioner to fix an upstairs problem. A larger system will cool the downstairs even faster and shut off even sooner, which usually makes the imbalance worse. That logic is explained in what size AC you need.

Two to three degrees is typical in a two-story home. A gap of six degrees or more usually points to a ductwork, insulation or return-air problem worth investigating.
